Working Woman

While I'm anxiously awaiting where we'll live in the summer and wondering where I will be doing my student teaching, I will interest you with my work history. When in Idaho, I found out my mother-in-law didn't know I used to work at Red Robin, at no fault of her own, so I thought it might be interesting to fill all of you in on my work history. YEA!!

Pre-real jobs. I worked as a babysitter. Not too exciting, except for when I had to babysit a newborn. I was scared to death to pick her up... I thought she would break!

#1. At 15, I started working at Big Dipper and Chocolate Factory in Page, AZ. During the interview, my boss actually told me to sample the ice cream so I could tell customers what it tasted it like. Famous last words, but it was AWESOME!!! (Had to file a police report for the business--ask me later)
#2. When I moved back to CA, I got a job at TJ Maxx. I "got" to work in the dressing room, bored out of my mind. Needless to say, it didn't last long.
#3. My mom got me a job working with her at Food For Thought. It was an artsy kitchenware store. Not really my thing, but customers liked my personality, so they bought from me... But not enough, because it went out of business a couple months later.
#4. I had to find another job ASAP because I was in a work-study class at school. Ugh. So I found a job at a medical office filing. I got a LOT of paper cuts. It wasn't bad, other than losing a couple years off my life having to smell the odor coming from the nurses: a pack of cigarettes per break "covered up" by a half bottle of smelly spray. It was bad. But, if you want to hear what happened when I quit, it's a good story!
#5. I moved to Simi Valley to live with my aunt and uncle and found a job at Sav-On Pharmacy. It was a really good job and I was actually sad to leave it and the people I worked with. They even got a going away cake. BUT, one of the pharmacists was really mean to customers and yelled at them sometimes. I don't think he liked his life. (Had to file a police report for the business--ask me later)

#6. When I moved back to San Diego I worked at Red Robin. I worked there for almost two years--longest job yet. My brother said I wouldn't enjoy it because it was a fun atmosphere, but I loved it. It was really hard for me when I started serving--I had to get used to people being jerks and realizing it wasn't personal. But I got really good and became one of the favorites. Really, they really liked me.
#7. When I came to BYU, I didn't work for the first year. Living at home and not having to pay rent really has its benefits (minus the curfew "for my own good"). After we got married, I decided I should find a job, so I worked for the BYU Office of IT. That was okay--BYU people can be weird sometimes though. And once I got this guy who thought the world was going to end or something and talked to me for an hour about why he wasn't allowed on BYU campus but was there anyway. It was awkward. I thought I would have to fill out a police report.
#8. After graduating, BYU doesn't like you. I worked for MyFamily.com. I didn't like it. That's all I'll say.
#9. I next found a job at Modbe Clothing--a local modest clothing company in Orem. This was also an interesting job. There were some good times and I found out a lot about the Better Business Bureau (through threats of reporting the company)... I liked some of the people I worked with and some of the benefits/clothes. I learned a lot about people and business.
#10. Anyway, since going back to school, I work two jobs. I work at a child care at the local rec center and sub through Provo School District when I have time. It's good but tiring and busy.

So, in ten years I've had ten jobs. Ouch. But, some lasted a lot longer than others so it sounds worse than it really is... I just can't get over how different they all were. I have gotten a lot of experience, but nothing that will really be good for me finding a teaching position, other than subbing. Oh well, I've had fun!

Cross Our Fingers

Mike and I just got back from Idaho for the weekend. The greatest reason we were there is Mike's Internship interview with Melaleuca. He said it went well and he was dressed appropriately while another guy interviewing was only wearing slacks and a button-up. We really hope he gets the internship--it would be great for experience, $$, and for him to have a break from school. (It would also be a little easier if he didn't get it because I wouldn't have to find a new job in IF and then a new job when we get back here, and we wouldn't have to worry about housing when we get back, plus I have to worry about/study for/take the Praxis (teaching exam)--but that's just between you and me ;).

Anyway, it was Spring Break, so the timing of the interview was great. It was nice to just go somewhere for the weekend, and relax. Now I have to worry about the homework that's due this week, but the break was nice. And the weather was surprisingly great. Before we went, we had seen that it was supposed to rain and thunderstorm the entire we were there, but it was sunny and in the 60s every day. Only on the last day did it get a little cloudy and wet. Hopefully we can bring more nice weather when/if we go for the summer!!!

Car Crash

Here's a news story from today. Take a look. You might recognize the intersection, it's ours. I didn't see it happen, but drove up about 20 minutes later. I drove home, but thought about walking back to it just to see what was going on. If I had, I would have gotten there in time to see the bodies dragged out of the cars (if you look at the pictures, they were taken after I drove by--the roof of the silver car was still attached and I saw a fireman talking to, or looking at, someone in the car) and into the lifeflight--it was hovering when I drove by.

AAAHHH. I just can't believe how many stupid people are allowed to drive. If you don't know, I've been in two accidents myself--not my fault--and thankfully they weren't this bad, even though one of them totaled my car. They are NOT fun and the effects last a long time.

Please drive safe!!!

I'm So Old Inside

The other day, Mike and I were listening to some music in the car as we drove. He popped in an oldies cd and I started singing along... He told me we needed to listen to more oldies so I would sing along some more--singing makes me in a better mood or something like that. I mentioned that the music made now is too loud and sung too fast to really know the words without looking at the lyrics. He laughed and told me I should have been born 30 years earlier. What's sad is that I either listen to oldies or talk radio when I'm in my car... I guess he's right.
However, I do have some current music: One Republic, Jason Mraz, Carrie Underwood (I don't listen to her too much anymore...). I just don't like to have to change cd's in my car and the radio stations around here, besides the oldies, have lame dj's. On road trips I break out of the shell and belt it out with Celine Dion and Sarah McLaughlin. Who's old now Mike??
Anyway, that's probably more information about my music habits than you needed to know...

Rant of the Day

Here's a plea to all the teachers out there who request subs--give them credit! I know many people sub because teachers don't make them teach and they usually sit at the desk all day babysitting. But come on!

I subbed today at a high school--earth science. The teacher had the class watch a movie (it was about volcanoes and even though I had to watch it three times, it was neat) and didn't even know that the movie wouldn't last the whole period. He left in his notes that the students should work out of the book "if" they had time. It's almost like teachers are willingly giving students the chance to goof off, talk, listen to their ipods and sneak out of class.

And really, teachers know what students are going to misbehave and what discipline works--let me know!!! I had the school secretary scold me because I sent misbehaving kids to the office--I should have called to the office first. Whatever.

In short, I think ALL wannabe teachers should have to sub before they get their own classroom so they can see what students are really like so they can let subs be productive and not waste everyone's time. (And it will weed out the people who shouldn't be teaching in the first place.)

Oh, and leave a picture seating chart so students can't lie when you ask them their name...
